Holi – The Festival of Colors

Holi – The Festival of Colors

Introduction

Holi is a festival of colors and joy. It is celebrated in India and many other countries. On this day, people play with colors, water, and enjoy sweets. Holi brings happiness and togetherness.

Why Do We Celebrate Holi?

A long time ago, there was a king named Hiranyakashyap. He wanted everyone to worship him, but his son Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. The king’s sister, Holika, had a magical shawl that could not burn in fire. She tried to burn Prahlad, but by God's grace, Holika burned instead, and Prahlad was safe.

This story teaches us that good always wins over evil. That is why, before Holi, we light a bonfire called Holika Dahan.

How Do We Celebrate Holi?

1. Holika Dahan – On the night before Holi, people burn wood and pray for happiness.

2. Playing with Colors – The next morning, everyone throws colors, splashes water, and enjoys music and dance.

3. Eating Sweets – People eat gujiya, malpua, and drink thandai.
